Sharing the Holiday Spirit

In 2001, former University electrician Ralph Himelrick and his co-workers used two miles of electric wire to string together 21,600 white bulbs for the first Lighting of the Lawn. The display—the balconies and balustrades, columns and pillars laced with light—dazzled thousands gathered for the event and initiated a tradition that now celebrates its seventh year.

The annual ceremony, held Dec. 6 this year, brings the University community together with local residents to share the holiday spirit. Musical groups singing a cappella, tours of pavilions and receptions with steaming mugs of cider make for a festive occasion.

This year’s event featured more lights on the Rotunda, a collection for Toys for Tots and a student dressed in a snowman’s costume running around the Lawn.
